A well-exposed 35mm negative holds more detail than most home digitizations ever capture. Flatbed scanners top out early, lab scans from years past were often delivered at web sizes, and the family archive was frequently digitized once, badly, on whatever hardware was available. Rescanning hundreds of negatives on a drum scanner is rarely realistic. Upscaling the digitizations you already have recovers much of that gap: it enlarges the scan while reconstructing the fine structure the scanner blurred, turning a 2000-pixel lab scan into a file that prints cleanly at 16×20 inches.
Grain Is Character, Not Noise
